Create a Simple 2-Step SMS Campaign
Create a new campaign
- Navigate to Campaigns > Create New Campaign from the side menu.
- Enter a descriptive Name for your campaign (e.g., "Pi Day Campaign").
- Select the Start Date for your campaign using the date picker.
You can leave the remaining fields blank for now and click Submit to proceed.

Add new steps
- Navigate to the Steps pane and click the (➕) icon to create a new step.
- In the Add Step dialog:
- Enter a clear, descriptive Name for your step.
- Specify the Delay (e.g., use a delay of 0 to trigger immediately upon campaign launch or set to 1 for one day delay prior to executing a given step).
- Click Submit to save the step.
Repeat this process to add additional steps as needed.

Add variants to each step
For each step, you will need to add variants that specify the actual (and personalized) content that will be sent to your population, as well as any logic that has to apply to determine who gets what.
For this campaign, you will set up two variants that will use different content templates based on the language attribute in the sample data.

In this screen you configure the variant logic.

- In the Content Type select Text
- Click on Add filter link to add logic to apply this variant to a specific segment
- From the dropdown choose the
custom_fields.languagefield and enter the value (e.g., English)

- In the Config you may need to enter Messaging Service value.
- Click Submit to save the variant.

You can then duplicate the variant we just configured into the current step.

Now let’s modify the cloned variant to apply to Spanish-speakers. Choose the variant to edit by clicking on the the variant in the table.

Update the variant filter to have the value of Spanish

Finally, duplicate these two variants into the next step

Now you have the campaign scaffolding with logic. Next we will create content templates for these variants and apply them to the campaign.
Creating Content Templates
Navigate to Text Templates on the left and click on Add Template button.
- Follow a consistent naming convention for clarity. Suggested format: Campaign – Variant – Content Topic (e.g., 'Pi Day – English – Pizza Joke').
- Hit Save Template to proceed to the content step.
- Enter the text message content in the next screen

Add the 3 other templates for each step / variant in the campaign. You may also want to re-use the templates across several variants.
Adding templates to the campaign steps
Navigate back to your campaign: Overview > Pi Day Campaign
- Click on the variant and then in the variant details pane, click on the Add Template button

- From the Template drop down choose one of the recently created templates (or type to search by name)
- Press Save to add this content template to the variant

Repeat this process for the other variants that need content associated with them.
Adding a Population and Setting Up a Cohort
For this campaign, we assume that your population already exists. Learn more about setting up clients and populations here.
- To add a population to the campaign, switch to the Population tab and click the (➕) icon to add a new population to this campaign.

Once the population is added, you will see updated counts that are available from all populations that were added to the campaign.
- The final step is to create a cohort (or several cohorts) that will receive communications from this campaign. Switch to the Cohorts tab and click on the “Setup Fixed Cohorts” button. In the dialog, indicate 1 cohort and set the start date to the intended cohort start date (3/14/2025).
